A Brief About the Information Commission

The Information Commission To promote transparency, accountability, and good governance by ensuring that citizens have timely access to information held by public institutions, while balancing the public’s right to know with legitimate privacy and security concerns.

The Commission is currently staffed by a team of five Commissioners who are responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Access to Information Act. They work to ensure that public bodies comply with the law and that citizens are educated about their rights. The Commission also conducts investigations and mediates disputes related to access to information, ensuring that requests are handled fairly and efficiently. Plans are on the way to recruit secretariat staff and this process will be completed in March 2025.

In addition to dealing with complaints, the Information Commission aims to actively engage in outreach programmes to inform the public about their rights and the processes involved in accessing information. This includes workshops, seminars, townhalls and collaboration with civil society organizations and the media to enhance public understanding of transparency issues.
